This inferencing lesson teaches kids how to "read" cartoons by combining the clues in the words and pictures with their schema to make new meanings. Students then use this new skill to read historical pictures. I attached the PowerPoint with the cartoons and pictures. I also attached the worksheet if you want to use it with your students. It goes with the PowerPoint.
Inferencing and Greek Mythology
All kinds of companies use Greek Mythology when chosing their name, logo, or advertising campaigns. My students are reading The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, so they have enough schema on Greek Mythology for this lesson. You may need to alter this lesson to account for your students' knowledge of Greek Mythology. In this lesson students use schema from Greek Mythology and text clues from companies' logos to make inferences about the advertised products.
